2nd Semakau Trip in Rainy November

December3

Written by Loi Yong Hwee

On 30th November 2011, when exams were less than a week away, a group of enthusiastic students put aside their studies for a while and set off on a journey to Pulau Semakau.

Despite heavy downpour, our moods were not dampened and continued on a bus tour around the landfill to learn how the island operates on sustainability and preserve its diverse wildlife and beautiful scenery. Semakau Landfill has activities such as bird watching and star gazing as well.

We were delighted to have Dr. Yoram Bauman, an environmental economist, who is working as a lecturer at University of Washington, to join us on the bus tour and share his views of the environment with us. After the tour, we were invited to a briefing on the solid waste management in Singapore. We also get to know about the design and operation of Pulau Semakau.

We shared much laughter together.  It was a memorable trip. We hope to organise more of these outings to broaden everyone’s environmental knowledge.

We would like to thank officers from NEA for facilitating our trip.

SP Clean & Green Week 2011

November20

Written by Nay Myo

In line with Clean and Green Singapore, SP ENV organized SP’s very own “Clean and Green Week” which was a week-long campaign that aims to inspire SP students to care for and protect our living environment by adopting an Environmentally-Friendly lifestyle. Each of us can make a conscious decision and effort to make green practices as an integral part of our daily lives. =)

During the week, we roamed around the campus to look for people who wears green and took pictures of them holding their eco-message. Photos were uploaded onto Facebook Be Green Wear Green and winners were judged based on the number of “Likes”.

Then, on the 15th and 16th of November, Faris, President of SPENV, organized a tour around InnoVillage Trail. He leads SP students (on 15th) as well as Secondary School students (on 16th) around InnoVillage.

Also on Wednesday, we invited Global Warming Study Group to hold an exhibition at SP Main Library entrance. Mr Low, from Global Warming Study Group, came down to share with us the effects of global warming , and how we can do our part to save the earth. SOS 2011. It was very insightful and inspirational.

SP CGW 2011 ended with our Green Screening with Green Message from the movies which are ‘The Day After Tomorrow’, ‘Erin Brockovich’, ‘Wall E’ and ‘The Cove’. Everyone had an enjoyable time and we ended the school week in a very memorable way.

We would like to thank Mr Low and the rest of Global Warming Study Group for their efforts and Etrican, eco-clothing brand, for sponsoring the vouchers.

Hydroculture workshop @ Island Nursery

November7

Written by Ng Rui Qin

On Saturday, 5 Nov 2011, a group of us woke up early in the morning to Island Landscape & Nursery Pte Ltd on a knowledge journey about indoor plants and their hydroculture technology. We were led by Mr Ivan Wee, the Retail Manager of the company.

Mr Wee led us around the nursery and explained all of the landscaping items, from water fountains to rocks to the pots suitable to be used, and the plants that can be grown indoors that they use to landscape such as the yellow palm.

The company has also used hydro culture to grow plants. Using the Lechuza pots from Germany that they sell, they use leca (lightweight expanded clay aggregate) together with nutrient solution and the water level indicator to grow plants. At first this method seemed hard, but thanks to Ms Zin Nwe Min, the Horticultuist, we were able to learn how to grow plants using hydroculture.

Knowing Our Spices Knowing Our Forests

October16

Written by Lim Xin Ying

On 15 October, a Saturday afternoon, 15 students gathered at Fort Canning Park for a learning journey to the world of spices.

Can you differentiate the smell of curry leaves and laksa leaves? We use our sight, smell and touch to feel and understand the different types of spices at the garden. There are spices such as candle nut, lemon grass and butterfly pea. Do you know that butterfly peas flowers are used to colour glutinous rice in Nyonya Chang? The difference between using butterfly peas flower and artificial colouring is that, when using butterfly peas flower as colouring, the glutinous rice will have some patches of white between the uneven shades of blue; on the contrary, artificial colouring creates even shades of blue on the glutinous rice.

After the 2 hours guided tour by Paul, the experienced guide who shared his knowledge selflessly, we believe we gain plenty of knowledge on spices and learn to appreciate them. The spices are part of our cultural and natural heritage.

We would like to thank Ms Asyiqin, an officer from NParks, and Paul, the volunteer guide for the Fort Canning Spice Trail.
